Why I’m running the London Marathon

Kevin Zokay-West

Last year I was part of the Alzheimer’s Research UK cheer squad with my six year old son George in Narrow Street cheering on all the runners; with an extra cheer to the those running for dementia research.

Running the marathon was something I’d wanted to do from its very first year, but although I had applied for a place for the first couple of years, unfortunately I never got a place.

In 2011 my mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia; and with her very swift decline, I set out to try and raise more awareness and much needed funds for dementia research.

Sadly Mum passed away in August 2013, and the weekend before this year’s marathon would have been her 75th birthday.

I’m sure crossing the finishing line there will be a tear or two.

I managed to get a late Golden Bond entry from the amazing staff at Alzheimer’s Research UK and started training.

Mum will be in my thoughts on the day, as she has been every day since her passing and I’m sure that crossing the finishing line there will be a tear or two.
